The U.S. Ambassador Ronald P. Spogli: In terms of ICT, Italy may be the natural bridge between Europe and the Mediterranean.”

(18 April 2008)

Presented on April 17 at the American Embassy in Rome, the first edition of EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008, the trade show dedicated to Information Technology, Telecommunications, Digital Media, and the Internet, the trade show will be held in Rome December 2-4, 2008.
The day witnessed the participation of Mary Ann Krause (E.J. Krause), who presented the EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008 event, as well as Maurizio Gasparri, Gianni De Michelis, Luca Barbareschi, Pier Virgilio Dastoli (UE), Giancarlo Capitani (Netconsulting), and many other authoritative people present at the meeting.
The following were the objectives of the organizers of EXPO COMM and the representatives of the political world, institutions, companies, and research organizations who participated in the event: a) the re-launching of the Country system; b) support for the domestic market of Information Technology, telecommunications, and digital media; c) a Euro-Mediterranean approach to give Italy a key role between Europe and the southern shore.
EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008,” stated U.S. Ambassador Ronald P. Spogli, “will be a meeting point of ideas between institutions, companies, and universities to reflect on the re-launching of ICT and the markets of innovation in Italy, in a Euro-Mediterranean context. In fact, Italy is the natural bridge between Europe and the Mediterranean area and ICT, which represents the crux of economic and social development of Information Technology companies, can and must constitute a useful moment of idea exchange and growth.
This represents,” Ambassador Spogli pointed out, “an opportunity not only for development for companies and the markets but also an affirmation of new services for the public and the political world, for an expansion of knowledge and instruction systems. Thanks to the participation of leading companies in the region in the sectors of telecommunications, digital media, and the internet, EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008 intends to fulfill the expectations of the institutions that establish the rules of the game at a national and international level, and of universities that assure new preparation for the development of companies.
In this context,” the Ambassador concluded, “the occasion of EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008 should be taken as an opportunity to re-launch these themes and an opportunity to meet, with an open platform through which companies and the County-systems may come together on the basis of reciprocal interest, with the prospect of opening the free market of the Mediterranean and the resulting confluence of the people and countries of the entire area.

EXPO COMM arrives in Italy. M. Gasparri: “The Development of Technologies for companies more open to the market and P.A. without any waste.”

(18 April 2008)

The presentation of Hon. Maurizio Gasparri at the event presenting EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008 held this morning at the U.S. Embassy in Rome.
The presentation of EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008 at the U.S. Embassy, the attention of Ambassador Spogli, underlines the order of priority of the processes related to the development of technology,” stated Hon. Maurizio Gasparri, “the importance of the presentation of EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008 lies in the fact that events like this can lead to greater collaboration among companies that operate in international and Italian markets, and being here today at the U.S. Embassy highlights the relevance of the relations between the United States and Italy, political, institutional, economic, and business relations“.
Perhaps we may be late,” Gasparri pointed out, “in Italy we often record broad band penetration data more slowly than in other parts of the world, but we have to say that there is a significant and favorable growth. And we should look to the future with optimism, because technologies are coming together; they are becoming inter-operational and the world of convergence is advancing. There is no other choice.
I believe that institutions must favor the growth of this very important sector, which is useful for public services and also for other needs.” Gasparri continued, “Often the political sector is forced to face the need to reduce the cost of government and waste. These are factors that affect public debt and create situations that are difficult to resolve, also because of inconsistency in the approach. On the other hand, the strong digitalization of government is always cited as a necessary solution, in order to offer services that are broader, faster, and more efficient. If it is on the net, the user and the public can control the speed of response and this is a stimulus for the various offices. It is certainly not easy to do it in all areas, but it is important in terms not only of economic investments, but also for the training of human capital.
I am convinced,” Gasparri concluded, “that Italy must go through this phase with more courage; it must believe in itself. Italy is famous all around the world for other aspects such as culture and art, sectors in which we can boast of extraordinary names. But Italy is also the country of Antonio Meucci and Guglielmo Marconi. We hope that this event, EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008 will help us take advantage of this great opportunity to take quick steps towards the future.

EXPO COMM arrives in Italy. Hon. G. De Michelis: “Innovation can be the area that re-launches a new role for Italy in Europe and in the Mediterranean.”

(18 April 2008)

Gianni De Michelis, a Europarlamentarian who was involved until recently in the European Directive Media Without Frontiers, spoke at the introduction of EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008, which was held at the U.S. Embassy in Rome.
In terms of innovation and ICT, Italy can play an extraordinary role in the Euro-Mediterranean area,” stated Hon. Gianni De Michelis, “and it is also important that the United States, a company in the sector among the most important in the world such as E.J. Krause, should decide to bring the message to the world of operators and companies from Italy and Rome.
Nevertheless,” De Michelis continued, “it does not appear that there is full awareness of this challenge in Italy, at either the political, institutional, or company level. And it is precisely for this reason that Italy is not among the countries that show the greatest sensitivity towards the themes of ICT development and the struggle of the Digital Divide. We must change our approach and for this reason EXPO COMM ITALIA 2008 is certainly an event that should not be missed.
In the last ten years,” De Michelis continued, “we have been following Europe; now we can turn the situation upside down, thanks to a new consideration of the European panorama which is moving ever increasingly southwards, with a pivotal geographical position for Italy in respect to the Mediterranean macro-region“.
In the Mediterranean,” De Michelis concluded, “the real perspective in play, in additional to the damaging fall of the digital divide, is the possibility of a strong Europe that is leading the entire Mediterranean towards a new phase of growth and towards a new political role in the area and in the world. In all of this, Italy must become a pivotal part and construct a significant role for itself. The area of innovation can be an excellent opportunity for growth.
